The second part of this series Within explores the emergence of self-awareness after birth portrayed through performance art combined with photography. It’s the process of learning and
adaptation, the harmony and conflicts with the external world, and the temporary compromises following conflicts.
An acrylic cubic space, transparent, with a person inside. The acrylic space represents an individual, delineating boundaries and transparent walls with oneself, other living beings, and the
entire society. It simultaneously presents a sense of dissonance between existence and non-existence, where one can see in and out but not truly grasp the reality. Drawing from personal
experiences, various environments such as white walls, forests, rocky edges, urban skyscraper rooftops, etc., are provided to performers, eliciting different situations that result in facial or
bodily reactions due to constraints (although everything depends on the performer's immediate feelings). These moments are then captured and compiled into a series of photographs.
“A deep rumbling sound emanates from the Earth. The pulse of the valley reverberates within us. He says that the tumultuous world is moving beneath our feet. We are akin to elephants, ants,
dinosaurs, and other colossal beasts, or even wandering ghosts from the past. And yet, we stand here now, present in the moment, while the world beneath us continues to turn.
“The car hurtles down the road, propelling us forward at breakneck speed before receding into the distance. The fields beside us blur into a sea of woolen fabric, and the wind buffets us
mercilessly, reminding us that we are mere spectators, outside of the box, with no time for reflection—only to be present in the moment, watching people play their roles, our minds
preoccupied with trivialities. We ponder which part of the house to tidy up on the weekend, our latest expenses, unanswered phone calls, and unread messages, or perhaps the piercing blue
eyes and red lips. These details are snatched up and then left behind in the wake of our retrograde journey. The fleeting flowers and pedestrians blend, forming a vast tableau. It’s my
impression of today, and I’ll always recall this moment when I think of January 3rd, 2021.”
“With its fixed bass and interplay between solo and ensemble, Bach’s music is the purest language. It reminds me of a Nordic fairy tale I read as a child. A princess was cursed to take the
form of a swan. While battling a goshawk, a young man crossing the ocean in a wine barrel saved her life. In return, the princess granted his every wish. Eventually, the swan’s wings fell off,
and she returned to her human form, looking as serene and classic as a mother.”
“Like Adjani.”
“The prairie stretches as far as the eye can see. People are praying. The unfamiliar accent and humming blend with the smoke that rises into the ivory twilight. The pure golden yellow sun; the
lemon stuffing in your palm. Turner’s landscape painting dyes the scenery as if it is bathed in a lovely, misty yellow hue. Stepping out of the car, I roll to the farthest end of my field of view. It is
a snowy spring. The angel feathers made a bed of soft goose down.”
“I hope to sing.”
“I sing loudly.”
Let's take it nice and easy.
